Jonathan Wells (69) and Harry Nielsen (44*) shared a vital stand of 88 for the fourth wicket to help Adelaide Strikers down Perth Scorchers by five wickets in a Big Bash League clash. Strikers crossed the target of 175 in the final over of the innings as they avoided the ignominy of defending champions ending up last in the league standings for the season.

Strikers didn’t exactly have the best of starts as they lost three wickets by the end of eight overs. With the score reading 64 for 3, Wells joined hands with Nielsen to put Strikers on course for a victory. The duo managed to blend fours and sixes with a diet of singles and twos as they inched closer to crossing the finish line.

Nathan Coulter-Nile dislodged Wells while Cameron Valente was run out by Mitchell Marsh. Eventually, Nielsen and Rashin Khan took the side home. Earlier, Josh Inglis (55) and Marsh (50) had crunched fifties to power Scorchers to a useful total. Coulter-Nile also made a crucial contribution, with a stunning 8-ball 25 lower down the order. Rashid bagged two scalps for Strikers.

Strikers are placed sixth with 12 points while Scorchers ended the season as the bottom-placed team with a mere eight points.

Brief scores: Perth Scorchers 174/6 in 20 overs (Josh Inglis 55; Rashid Khan 2-22) lost to Adelaide Strikers 175/5 in 19.2 overs (Jonathan Wells 69; Nathan Coulter-Nile 2-28) by five wickets
