Sarah Taylor and Katherine Brunt have been included in England Women’s ODI squad for the forthcoming three-match series in India. The pair of veterans missed England’s run to the final of last year’s Women’s World T20 in the Caribbean due to personal and injury reasons respectively. While Taylor will only partake in the ODI series, whose results will account towards the 2017-20 ICC Women’s Championship, Brunt will be available for the T20I series in Guwahati that follows. Both the stars will not play the subsequent series in Sri Lanka.
Fast bowler Brunt, 33, returns to competitive after aggravating a pre-existing back condition during a World T20 warm-up clash against India. She was replaced in that squad by Fran Wilson with the Western Storm spinner once again filling in for the tour of Sri Lanka.
Taylor missed the World T20 after as part of her management of an anxiety concern. The keeper-batter took a break from the game in 2016 but returned to play in England’s 50-over World Cup win of 2017. The 29-year-old last featured in the ICC Women’s Championship clash against New Zealand at Derby in July 2018.
In Taylor’s absence, Warickshire’s Amy Jones deputised behind the stumps and her consistent showing allows her to keep her place despite the return of her more prolific senior. Jones will don the gloves once Taylor leaves at the end of the three ODIs against India.
Meanwhile, fast bowler Jenny Gunn has been given a break from both series and will report back in April, while Kirstie Gordon and Katie George were unavailable for selection through injury. Uncapped Sussex fast bowler Freya Davies, who earned a central contract for the 2019 season, will be part of the squad for the T20I series as well as the tour of Sri Lanka that follows.
“We’ve looked to use as many players as we can to give everyone an opportunity to learn and grow as we head into a busy year,” England coach Mark Robinson said on Thursday (February 7). “We’ve included 18 players across the squads and they’ll come in and out as the tours progress as we look to improve our strength in depth.
“We’ve got a huge Ashes series in the summer, as well as hosting the West Indies, and obviously there are ICC Women’s Championship points up for grabs across both of these tours so there’s hard work ahead of us but we’re excited,” he added.
England Women will play three ODIs against India at the Wankhede Stadium starting Feb 22. The three T20Is in Guwahati will be played on March 4, 7 and 9. The itinerary of the Sri Lanka tour is still to be confirmed.
