Riding on the back of half centuries from Tom Smith (79 not out), Ryan Higgins (76) and skipper Chris Dent 58, Gloucestershire posted a strong 339/7 on the opening day of their Division 2 County Championship encounter against Worcestershire.

Opting to bat first, the hosts lost opener Miles Hammond off the fourth ball of the day before Dent and Gareth Roderick resurrected the innings with their 70-run stand. Dent was the fourth wicket to fall, when the team’s score was on 125. But Smith and Higgins added 128 runs for the fifth wicket partnership to take the team past 250-run mark.

Higgins’s dismissal brought the best stand of the day to close, but Smith finished the day unbeaten on 79 as bad light forced early stumps when four overs were remaining.

Brief scores: Gloucestershire 339/7 (Tom Smith 79*, Ryan Higgins 76, Chris Dent 58; Joe Leach 3-71) vs Worcestershire.
