An unbeaten 96 from opener D’Arcy Short and a four-wicket haul for Rilee Meredith kept Melbourne Stars pinned to the bottom of the Big Bash League table as Horbart Hurricanes walked to a comfortable 59-run victory.
Hurricanes made a flying start after losing the toss as Matthew Wade and Short added 95 runs for the first wicket off 69 deliveries. Wade fell for a 38-ball 41, but Short resumed to pile on the runs. His 43-run stand with Jake Doran included the latter contributing just seven runs, while the next stand was worth 47 runs with Ben McDermott that pushed Hobart Hurricanes to 185 for 2 in 20 overs.
Stars never managed to forge a formidable partnership to push for a successful chase. Besides Meredith – who finished with figures of 4 for 21 in 4 overs – Jofra Archer and Johan Botha picked a couple of wickets each.
There were two partnerships that promised a strong riposte but ended prematurely. First for the second wicket between Ben Dunk and Nick Larkin worth 35 runs and next for the fifth wicket between Dwayne Bravo and Seb Gotch worth 43 runs. The middle-order couldn’t mount a strong fight as the wickets tumbled regularly.
Stars were eventually bowled out for 126 in the 18th over, losing by 59 runs.
